Bio DARLENE MADOTT is best known for her short stories which have been published internationally and been translated into Italian. She was born in Toronto and after completing her B.A. at the University of Toronto. She worked as an editor with Saturday Night and Toronto Life magazines. She published short stories across Canada and brought out her first novel, Song of Silence in 1978. She then studied law and worked as a lawyer for the rest of her professional career. She continued to write and mostly collections of linked short stories, Bottled Roses appeared in 1985 and Joy, Joy Why Do I Sing? in 2004. Her narratives often reflect the oral story telling tradition of her Italian grandparents. Her screen play, Mazilli Shoes (1999), questions the nostalgia that some Italians have for the old country. By the time she retired from the practice of law Madott had authored seven books, including Stations of the Heart (2012) and Making Olives and Other Family Secrets (2012). Her two most recent books are Dying Times, 2021, launched during COVID to wide acclaim, and Winners and Losers, spring, 2023. A lawyer who practiced for over three decades, Dying Times, her eighth book, grew out of aspects of her legal background and was a fictional exploration of the last journey. Winners and Losers (2023), her ninth book, circles back to track the legal and life journeys through losses and victories from near the beginning. Madott has twice won the Bressani Literary Award and has been shortlisted for the Gloria Vanderbilt sponsored Carter V. Cooper Short Fiction Award three times, as well as being a frequent finalist in Accenti Magazine competitions, among others. Her short-story "Appropriation" was short-listed for the inaugural Nona Heaslip best Canadian short story award, October, 2023. She lives in Toronto.
