Membership is open to anyone who writes and is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. There are three membership categories: Member, Professional, and Student. All three categories have the same rights and benefits (students pay a lower rate); however, only members with Professional designation can participate in special teaching, mentoring, touring, and speaker programs (e.g., Roving Writers).

Regular Membership

As a regular member, you have full access to all discounts and benefits of membership. You can attend any meeting or workship held by any of our branches across Canada at the member rate (note that branch meetings are free for members).


Professional Membership

You are eligible to apply for Professional designation if you are any of the following and have been published or produced and received payment for your work:

• book author
• short-story writer
• freelance writer
• journalist or reporter
• scriptwriter / screenplay writer
• translator
• technical writer

PLEASE NOTE: Certain criteria apply, and support is required at the time of application; your membership will not be completely processed until we receive  your application package and your application has been approved by the Membership Committee.


Student Membership

You are eligible to apply as a Student if you are a full-time student at an accredited institution and are at least 18 years old. (Proof of status and institution is required at the time of application; your membership will not be fully processed until this has been received. Sorry: Part-time and continuing education students are not eligible.)
