Humour can be one of the most powerful—and most challenging—tools a writer can use. On Saturday, March 28, Muskoka Authors Association invites writers for an opportunity to learn from one of Canada’s masters of comic storytelling, Terry Fallis, two-time winner of the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and author of ten national bestsellers, including his latest novel, The Marionette (2025). In this lively and insightful workshop, Fallis will share practical techniques for bringing humour to the page, along with thoughtful reflections on what it truly means to live the writing life.
Participants will enjoy two engaging sessions: The Writer’s First Responsibility, a thought-provoking talk that challenges the myth of the tortured artist, and Make ’em Laugh, a hands-on workshop exploring the art and craft of writing humour. Expect practical advice, real examples from successful comic writers, and, of course, a few good laughs along the way.
Terry Fallis’ award-winning novels include The Best Laid Plans, which won the 2008 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and was named the 2011 winner of CBC’s Canada Reads as the “essential Canadian novel of the decade.” Several of his books have been national bestsellers and Leacock Medal finalists or winners, with titles such as Up and Down, No Relation, Operation Angus, and A New Season earning widespread acclaim. His latest novel, The Marionette (2025), is also an instant national bestseller. He is currently working on his eleventh novel to be released in November 2026.
