Excerpt:

She was toying with me, keeping me paralyzed, but her wry, crooked smile aroused an uncontrollable longing to be taken.

She raised her right eyebrow, questioning me. I was lost.

“Now?”

“Yes,” I whispered.
A sensuous aqua-blue energy flowed from her, and our auras twisted and curled around each other, becoming entwined. Mine, a soft, pale red, stroked her blue strands of energy.

She licked her lips.

Two prominent canine teeth protruded over her bottom lip. As she exhaled, a wisp of lavender flooded my senses, and I relaxed into a state of pure calm. She bent over and murmured, “You can be whatever you want.”

A hot, wet tongue licked my neck. My whole frame trembled, and my only need was for her to pierce me. I felt a pinprick as her canines punctured my skin. My blood flowed. The sheer wet silkiness as it seeped onto my skin gave me an exhilarating sense of satisfaction. I relaxed as her overpowering lustful thirst supped my old self and offered me everlasting life and the ability to become whatever I wanted.

I envisioned myself as a beautiful woman with lustrous blonde hair streaking down my back. Or a hunk of a guy with rippling abs, a taut stomach, and biceps to flex. I could change my looks to lure humans to certain death. Testosterone-loaded men would become intoxicated with lust, desiring me as I sank my teeth into them. Women would swoon and drown in my alluring, deep brown eyes.

"Since the publication of Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1897, the vampire genre has seen a multitude of novels and other media exploring these intriguing and terrifying supernatural beings. Standing out in such a crowded field is no small feat, but Vampires in BC, by Keith Costelloe, achieves this with a refreshing take on the genre. The story follows Jude, who wakes up in a hospital after a severe car accident, only to be visited by the vampire leader and turned into one of them. What ensues is a vivid and engaging narrative of Jude's adjustment to his new life as a vampire, accompanied by a memorable cast of supporting characters. This book is a true breath of fresh air in the supernatural genre, characterized by snappy dialogue and vividly descriptive scenes that immerse the reader in Jude's world. From his abrupt induction into vampire life to the moment he turns his best friend, the story keeps readers captivated with its dynamic storytelling. The main antagonist, Vam, the vampire leader, is particularly compelling. Her presence is almost ominous, and Costelloe's portrayal makes her a figure that evokes a sense of dread whenever she appears. This skillful character development is a testament to Costelloe's ability to bring his characters to life. Humor is also skillfully woven throughout the book, enhancing the modern setting mixed with vampire lore, which creates a fascinating and entertaining backdrop. One particularly exciting aspect of the book is its cliffhanger ending, which leaves readers eagerly anticipating what will happen next in Jude's journey and his quest for revenge against Vam. Keith Costelloe has brought something unique to the vampire genre. In a sea of similar tales, Vampires in BC stands out, showcasing Costelloe's talent for revitalizing familiar themes with fresh perspectives and engaging storytelling."
