Bio Born in Sault Ste. Marie and now living in Kingston Ontario, Helga Rausch served Canada as a soldier for 38 years, but has been a writer longer. She exorcized her youthful angst with poems by turns angry and tranquil, and tried journalism as a teen reporter. Setting aside her ambition to become a bush pilot (vetoed by her mother as too dangerous), she was selected to attend the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in 1982 as a member of the third class of women. Graduating with a BA in English Literature and Philosophy, she served in the Canadian Armed Forces for a further 35 years with postings across Canada and a deployment to the Middle East. While serving, she married, raised three children, and obtained an MA in War Studies. She also edited books, wrote columns for local newspapers, and other short pieces mostly for herself. Finally giving in to the writer agitating within, Helga retired from active military duty in September 2020. She is a student in the University of King's College Master of Fine Arts in Creative Non-Fiction. Her manuscript in progress is "Obstacle Course - The Story of Women at Canada's Military Colleges." She is the proprietor of Her Quill Sharp, a writing and editing business; and volunteers as an editor for the charitable Order of St. George and as a director on the Board of the Commissionaires. Finally, Helga is a doting mother and grandmother, is owned by a Hungarian Vizsla, and loves riding bicycles.
