Bio Author of Sun Dogs and Yellowcake. Born in southern Saskatchewan, lived as a baby in a tent-house, and grew up in a uranium mining town. I am now a confirmed West Coast city-dweller. Sailed to Hawaii in a concrete ketch and to San Francisco in an infinitely more seaworthy sailboat. Book lover, dog lover, Spanish student, and gardener when I have time. Volunteer and environmentalist. As a securities lawyer, I worked for mining companies with operations around the world. I lived with three generations of my family at Gunnar and interviewed over a hundred former Gunnar residents to write the book. Sun Dogs and Yellowcake was published in September 2016 and I'm now hard at work on my next project.
Publications Published short story 'The Colour of Us' in Issue 21 of The Cabinet of Heed. 'Sun Dogs and Yellowcake', part memoir, part oral history, is a humorous and poignant account of a recent but largely forgotten era. Canada’s "Father of Uranium," Gilbert LaBine, found Canada’s only source of radium. When WWII began, American and British governments came knocking at his door, seeking the mine’s waste product–uranium. Canada’s uranium would help end the second Great War and arm the next, the Cold War. An exploration frenzy swept the western world and LaBine’s new discovery at Gunnar Mines attracted attention across North America and beyond. Gunnar’s 800 to 900 residents – immigrants fleeing post-war Europe, job-seeking southerners, and the area’s First Nations and Métis – found adventure, romance, tragedy, and a freedom never again to be equaled. It was an exuberant and innocent time. Meanwhile, residents had lamps made of uranium drill core in their homes and all the kids played at the tailings pond.
