It's 1930s Nantucket, a time of prohibition, jazzy tunes, and swinging golf clubs. Looking for some light-hearted fun, Dot O'Gorman, a young schoolteacher visits the village of 'Sconset, hoping for madcap adventures and, maybe, romance. Before the week is out, Dot finds herself serenaded by handsome but perhaps untrustworthy suitors, who may have more pressing things on their minds than love.

Unmistakably, it was Chad, with rumpled brown slacks, disheveled white shirt, sleeves rolled up to the elbows, hair ruffled on all sides either from the wind or from work, and, of course, the scowl. Always the scowl.

I paused and watched, as he crossed the wharf, then climbed the stairs into the boathouse and went inside. I made my decision quickly. I was not to be deterred. I carried on walking down the wooden planks, but I now was aware of the sound of my sandals, slapping at each step, out of sync with the whooshing waves. I forced myself to carry on forward, moving between Chad's moored boat and the boat house, and on past the last few boats and houses that lined the end of the dock. As I casually leant out to see the view at the end of the dock, I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck rise up, as if I were aware that I was being observed. My actions became awkward, and my breathing rushed. I looked up at the windows that opened onto the dock, but no shadows or silhouette indicated an observer. Yet, I had the foolish impulse to run.

I gave a small shudder, shaking myself in an effort to restore my confidence, then turned in what I hoped looked like a leisurely manner, slowly heading back down the dock. Somehow, I made it back to the street, letting out a huge breath I didn't know I had been holding. Why I had such an intense reaction to seeing Chad was a mystery. But something had made me uneasy, that was for sure.

"History, Romance, Suspense!! A triple-threat delivered! 'Sconset Serenade makes the exciting 1930s in Nantucket come alive, with rum-running, jazzy tunes, and movie stars. A wonderfully accurate depiction of Siasconset village on the island plays as a backdrop for a love story that is threatened by hidden sinister activities within the community. An exuberant telling of these more innocent times, 'Sconset Serenade is another Tale of Nantucket that blends a delicate romance with a tongue in cheek glimpse of olden Nantucket. Songs and mystery abound!"

About the Author

'Sconset Serenade is Marilyn Boyle Taylor's second historical romance suspense novel. It was inspired by the Gray Lady of the Sea, Nantucket, where she was a year-round resident for a period of time, and, as is the myth, it never let go its hold upon her. She now lives in the Caledon Hills and is a member of SOCAN as a lyricist, the League of Canadian Poets, and the Canadian Authors Association. Her poetry, journalism, and songs, (as Marilyn Boyle) have appeared in the Eastern Iowa Review, Hysteria, In the Hills, Biline, Fresh Voices, and Celebrating Canadian Women: Prose and Poetry About Women, among others.
