Writers’ Circles

Would a writers’ circle help you?

We welcome writers of all levels and in all genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry and other.

How it works

A group of writers gathers on a regular basis to support each other in the writing process. The critique should be substantive, focusing on plot or character development, narrative strengths or weaknesses, the accuracy of background material, etc., and have the goal of helping the writer improve the written material, including both constructive criticism and warranted praise.

Members talk about the benefits of belonging to a writers’ circle:

Belonging to a writers’ circle means I have a group of people who share my goals and interests. It is wonderful to be able to discuss writing wholeheartedly with someone who understands.

There is no better way to stay focused and get helpful feedback when writing. Belonging to a Writers’ Circle was instrumental in my achieving a manuscript that got picked up by a publisher.

Author’s autonomy. I have the chance to listen to helpful comments and suggestions, but I am free to use them or not, as my inner artist guides me.

Networking. As part of a group, I get to know other writers. I feel more comfortable in my writers’ organization because I know more about the people. It makes a difference to arrive at a Canadian Authors meeting and recognize the faces of others.

Encourages me to be more productive and … know better where to market by seeing what some liked about my piece of work.

The exposure to different points of view is valuable.

The feedback I received gave me the courage to submit my work into a writing contest. I won.

Joining a Writers’ Circle

Ongoing participation is open to members of Canadian Authors-Metro Vancouver. A prospective member can attend three meetings, and then both the prospective member and the group decide if the Writers’ Circle is a good fit. At that time, the person is required to join the Canadian Authors Association if they are not already a member.

At this time, the Victoria Canadian Authors group does not have a writers’ circle in operation.
