Bio Anna Marie Sewell is a multi-genre writer, whose artistic practice centres performative, collaborative work. Recent examples include: ‘By Heart’ 10-language spoken&sung concert, while Writer-in-Residence at MacEwan University; ‘From Survival to Thrival’ lecture/writing workshop series with Edmonton Jewish Seniors Centre; ‘Journey Song’ choral composition with Mari Alice Conrad for National Choral Composers program; ’Ancestors & Elders’ with Ukrainian Shumka Dance. Sewell has 25 years of experience teaching poetry to youth, first in Indigenous cultural camps in the Okanagan, and then with Youthwrite. For 6 years, she led a Creative Writing program for Adult Literacy learners with The Learning Centre in Edmonton. For The Writers Union of Canada, Anna Marie has served on National Council, chaired the Equity Task Force, and led a national Talking Circle, and belongs to various other arts organizations. Anna Marie, Edmonton’s 4th Poet Laureate (2011-13) has 2 critically-lauded books of poetry, 2009’s Fifth World Drum (Frontenac House) and 2018’s For the Changing Moon: Poems & Songs (Thistledown Press). In 2020, Edmonton’s Stonehouse Publishing released her first novel, Humane, the BPAA’s Book Club summer selection, an autumn 2020 Globe&Mail Books ’must-read’ and soon to be an audio book via CNIB. Current projects include: online Indigenous Literature course development with Queens University; Welcome Hamster! kids play with Kompany!; and a sequel to Humane. All of Sewell’s work draws on her blended heritage - Mi’gmaq/Anishinaabe/Polish - rural upbringing, love of music, and years of working internationally and inter-culturally.
