SUMMARY:Afterwords Literary Festival: Workshop with Thea Lim
DESCRIPTION:Worldbuilding is for Everyone with Thea Lim\n  \n \nThe AfterWords Literary Festival was co-founded by Ryan Turner and Stephanie Domet\, and in the fall of 2019\, AfterWords held its inaugural edition.  In 2020\, due to Covid-19\, the festival will host live events online between September 30th and October 4th. AfterWords is primarily interested in presenting (and being in the audience for) conversations among writers about the ideas that push them forward\, the experiences that formed them into writers\, and what writing can tell us about how to be human. Our mission is to give those writers who choose to join us the very best experience that Halifax has to offer. \nWe will offer live captioning upon request to all of our online events.  \nWe celebrate our festival on the unceded and traditional homeland of the Mi’kmaq People. We do land acknowledgements as a part of the reconciliation process. In order for this festival to exist\, for Canadians to enjoy the lives that they have\, Indigenous people were removed\, displaced\, and killed. This truth is an uncomfortable one\, but one that is necessary to face if we\, as fellow Canadians\, are to understand our whole history. We honour the Mi’kmaq\, whose stories have been shaped by Mi’kma’ki. \nHow do authors build believable worlds? The term “worldbuilding” is usually associated with science fiction and fantasy\, but the first job for any story is to convince the reader that the world is real. While also\, of course\, starting the plot\, revealing the characters\, painting emotion…This workshop will teach you the basic rules of launching a world\, with max economy and multitasking\, for any genre and any writer. Plus\, we’ll also talk about how worlds that don’t make space for readers from marginalized groups\, are 95% of the time also badly built. \n\nFee of $15.00. \n3:30-5:00 pm AST on Friday\, October 2nd. \nRegistration opens August 10th. Limit of 12 participants. \n

DESCRIPTION:The FOLD Kids Bookfest includes a fantastic array of events featuring a diverse array of authors and illustrators who’ve created books for young people (ages 0-18). In addition to events centred around children and young people\, the festival includes opportunities for adult writers of children’s literature to take part in pitch sessions and to develop their craft through in-person workshops with the festival’s incredible lineup of authors. \n  \n \n  \nCherishing Indigenous Languages in Picture Books \nPicture books are playing an important role in sharing Indigenous languages with young readers. Join authors David A. Robertson\, Dallas Hunt\, and Jennifer Leason as they discuss the making of dual-language picture books and the preservation of Indigenous languages with bestselling author Waubgeshig Rice. \nThis event is recommended for educators (parents\, teachers\, guardians\, and librarians) and is sponsored by the Peel Elementary Teachers’ Local.

DESCRIPTION:With Serena Bhandar\, Danny Ramadan and jaye simpson \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAs QT2BIPOC\, our existence is science fiction. We live as a product of our ancestor’s collective dreams\, imagination\, and their relentless fight against the post-apocalyptic regime of European colonization. As we sit twenty years into the new century\, uprisings grow\, and the call for change is making people ask\, “If not this world\, then what?” \nIn this panel discussion\, explore the power and importance of QT2BIPOC futurisms in shaping and reframing the world we currently inhabit. We will discuss the importance of storytelling\, writing through our own personal truths\, magic\, and the role of the artist in this time of uprising\, burning\, and re-creation. We will discuss joy as revolution\, queer love\, and the ever-important question\, “What next?” \nCurated and moderated by K.P Dennis and sponsored by Victoria Arts Council.
