DESCRIPTION:Syrian-Canadian author Danny Ramadan published his first collection of short stories at the age of 19\, and worked as a journalist in Syria\, Lebanon and Egypt before resettling in Canada. Join this celebrated author as he discusses Own Voices\, citing his various writer identities\, including former refugee and queer person. Danny will also discuss craft\, read from his work\, and answer questions from the moderator and audience. \nTo register\, email VANinfo@CanadianAuthors.org. \nDanny Ramadan has published in a variety of genres. He is currently serving as Writer-in-residence at the Saskatoon Public Library. His debut novel\, The Clothesline Swing\, won the Independent Publisher Book Award and The Canadian Authors Association Award. Also shortlisted for an Evergreen Award\, a Sunburst Award and a Lambda Award\, the novel has been translated into French\, German and Hebrew. His children’s book\, Salma the Syrian Chef\, is nominated for the Forest of Reading’s Blue Spruce award. His forthcoming novel\, The Foghorn Echoes\, will be released by Penguin Canada and Canongate UK in Summer 2022. Danny graduated from UBC with an MFA in Creative Writing and lives in Vancouver with his husband\, Matthew Ramadan.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s festival GlobalAsian: from Grassroots to Globalization features authors and cultural activists from not only Canada\, but across the Asian diaspora. As “Asian” cannot easily be defined within geographical borders of one continent\, but rather a conceptual collection of experiences and memories\, LiterASIAN shines a spotlight that critically examines what it means to be a storyteller of Asian descent. \nThis is the second year that LiterASIAN will be virtually broadcast live across the world festival will feature events featuring authors from across North America and the world. \n  \nValerie Luu & Andria Lo of Chinatown Pretty \nModerated by June Chow \nChinatown Pretty was created by photographer Andria Lo and writer Valerie Luu\, two friends who love dim sum and documenting Chinatown. What started out as a blog and Instagram channel that photographed and interviewed elders in Chinatown evolved to become a book of portraits and interviews worn by poh pohs (grandmas) and gung gungs (grandpas) of Chinatowns across San Francisco\, Oakland\, Los Angeles\, Chicago\, New York City\, and Vancouver.
