SUMMARY:Afterwords Literary Festival: Advanced Workshop with Sue Goyette
DESCRIPTION:Writing into the Unknown: fortifying a curious and imaginative practice with Sue Goyette\n  \n \n\nThe AfterWords Literary Festival was co-founded by Ryan Turner and Stephanie Domet\, and in the fall of 2019\, AfterWords held its inaugural edition.  In 2020\, due to Covid-19\, the festival will host live events online between September 30th and October 4th. AfterWords is primarily interested in presenting (and being in the audience for) conversations among writers about the ideas that push them forward\, the experiences that formed them into writers\, and what writing can tell us about how to be human. Our mission is to give those writers who choose to join us the very best experience that Halifax has to offer. \nWe will offer live captioning upon request to all of our online events.  \nWe celebrate our festival on the unceded and traditional homeland of the Mi’kmaq People. We do land acknowledgements as a part of the reconciliation process. In order for this festival to exist\, for Canadians to enjoy the lives that they have\, Indigenous people were removed\, displaced\, and killed. This truth is an uncomfortable one\, but one that is necessary to face if we\, as fellow Canadians\, are to understand our whole history. We honour the Mi’kmaq\, whose stories have been shaped by Mi’kma’ki. \n\n\nHow do we engage with this tumultuous and potent time as writers? How do we keep our practice vibrant and intact? Sue will create a space for this crucial conversation and participants will be invited to recommit to their writing practice with a renewed vigour. Using creative prompts and through discussion\, participants will have the opportunity to re-engage with the serious practice of play and emergence while reckoning with their private worries of failure and of success. Writers are invited to bring their worst fears about their work to the discussion so they may start the transformative practice of facing them. \n\n\n\nFee of $20.00. \n10:00-11:30 am AST on Saturday\, October 3rd. \nRegistration opens August 10th. Limit of 15 participants. For advanced writers. \n\n

SUMMARY:Afterwords Literary Festival: Workshop with JJ Steeves
DESCRIPTION:Memoirs of the Mundane with JJ Steeves\n  \n \nThe AfterWords Literary Festival was co-founded by Ryan Turner and Stephanie Domet\, and in the fall of 2019\, AfterWords held its inaugural edition. \n\nWe will offer live captioning upon request to all of our online events. \nAs a culture we have certain notions about who should and should not write memoirs– but of course we do everyone a disservice by only valuing a small segment of voices! Luckily\, comics have a long history of what is often referred to as “diary comics\,” and many diverse voices have created diary comics over the years to process\, share\, and connect their unique feelings\, experiences and narratives with others. For many\, this means meandering through what we would consider the mundane details of life\, and that is partly what we shall celebrate in our workshop together. Not all memoirs need to be from famous politicians or celebrities! Instead\, using the combination of words and drawings\, we can learn to honour parts of ourselves we may not take the time to acknowledge normally. \n\n\nFee of $15.00. \n1:00-2:00 pm AST on Saturday\, October 3rd. \nRegistrations opens August 10th. Limit of 12 participants. \n

SUMMARY:Afterwords Literary Festival: Workshop with Randy Boyagoda
DESCRIPTION:A truth universally acknowledged: The first page matters with Randy Boyagoda\n  \n \n\nThe AfterWords Literary Festival was co-founded by Ryan Turner and Stephanie Domet\, and in the fall of 2019\, AfterWords held its inaugural edition. \n\nWe will offer live captioning upon request to all of our online events. \n\n\n\nGreat stories begin with great openings. In this workshop\, you will explore the promise and peril of how to begin a work of fiction. Any one decision – of perspective\, voice\, location\, time sequence – has a series of cascading effects on what you decide to do next. Done well\, the first page invites readers into the rest of the story with balancing ratios of curiosity and committing. Looking at a series of examples — from the likes of Herman Melville\, Elena Ferrante\, Ian Williams\, and Arundhati Roy  — we will discuss your writing ambitions and plans in the context of what makes for the best possible start to the stories you want to tell. \nFee of $15.00. \n2:30-4:00 pm AST on Saturday\, October 3rd. \nRegistration opens August 10th. Limit of 12 participants. \n

SUMMARY:Victoria Festival of Authors: Truth\, Trauma\, Beauty\, Beast

SUMMARY:Victoria Festival of Authors: Simply Unbelievable - Fresh Fiction for Unfathomable Times
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nWith Zsuzsi Gartner\, Catherine Hernandez\, Mallory Tater and Doreen Vanderstoop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIn the midst of unprecedented global uncertainty\, what each of us believes—about ourselves and about the systems of power we live within—can have direct and dire consequences on the way the world moves. \nJoin these four novelists whose work bravely contends with the contemporary crisis of credibility. A woman’s grief turns her into a magnet for dark stories—or possibly even a saint—as strangers confess their deepest secrets to her. Racialized queer people fight an oppressive regime that puts those deemed “Other” into concentration camps. The youth of an alternative community struggle to follow the rules their charismatic founder established generations ago. And a woman fights to save her family and her farm in a near-future fraught with climate calamity and disease. \nModerated by Matthew J. Trafford. Closed-Captioned. \nFREE\, BUT REGISTRATION REQUIRED. REGISTER HERE. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Victoria Festival of Authors: Writing in a Time of Slow Disaster
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nWith Jenna Butler\, Jessica Johns\, Joanna Lilley and Shaena Lambert\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis panel discussion brings together four authors who\, through a variety of approaches and topics\, are exploring what it means to be writing in our present time of social upheaval and global climate disaster. Personal stories are interwoven with the practicalities of beekeeping on the edge of the boreal forest in Jenna Butler’s essay collection Revery: A Year of Bees. In Jessica John’s poetry collection How not to Spill\, we experience an Indigenous perspective of land\, water\, ancestry\, and futures. The poetry collection Endlings\, by Joanna Lilley\, gives voice to extinct animals and these poems become poignant reminders of just how precarious existence on our planet is. In Shaena Lambert’s novel Petra\, we are introduced to the original Green Party leader Petra Kelly whose work in 1980s Germany bears striking similarities to battles being fought today. \nModerated by Verena Kaminiarz. Closed-Captioned. \nFREE\, BUT REGISTRATION REQUIRED. REGISTER HERE. \n\n\n\n
