The festival will include the stories of women\, the stories of Indigenous writers\, writers of different experiences\, cultural backgrounds\, and orientations. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWriting Outside the Box: 9:00 am – 11:15 am on September 25th\, 2020 \nMolson Award-winning experimental fiction writer Diane Schoemperlen shares her “box of tricks”\, offering techniques for opening yourself to experimentation with literary form by using the page in unique ways\, re-imagining the arrangement of text on the page\, or incorporating visual elements. For the non-adventurous or stuck writer\, or one who feels creativity welling but isn’t sure how to activate it\, this is a gentle way to bust out of the rut of conventional story-telling and get the creativity flowing. In-class exercises give you hands-on practice\, and you may surprise yourself by creating something that’s outside the box. \nLimited enrolment\, register in advance.

The festival will include the stories of women\, the stories of Indigenous writers\, writers of different experiences\, cultural backgrounds\, and orientations. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWriting the Real: 1:30 pm – 2:15 pm on September 24th\, 2020 \nAward-winning author Joan Thomas investigates the literary sweet spot where imagination and actuality meet and cross-pollinate. As a class\, you will look at the approaches of various novelists who treat real characters and events in forceful and contemporary ways. Joan talks about the research and writing processes she has developed when writing fiction explicitly rooted in actuality (whether in history or more recent news). Participants have a chance to discuss the artistic and ethical questions that they need to consider as they locate\, within real life stories\, the subversive truths of fiction. \n*SOLD OUT*

DESCRIPTION:The Kingston WritersFest 2020 virtual festival takes place September 23-27\, 2020\, with more than 60 writers in nearly 50 events over 5 days! The festival will include the stories of women\, the stories of Indigenous writers\, writers of different experiences\, cultural backgrounds\, and orientations. \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPoetry for Where We Find Ourselves: 4:00 pm – 4:45 pm on September 25th\, 2020 \n“What a place we find ourselves in now. What a mad and dangerous universe of possibility.” (Matt Suddain\, The Theatre of the Gods) \nPoets Canisia Lubrin and Sadiqa de Meijer open up the universe of possibility in their poetry. Canisia interrogates selfhood against the contemporary backdrop of toxic nationalism and climate disaster; and Sadiqa writes about the “distraction\, exhaustion\, exhilaration\, and fear of raising a child through illness and crisis.” Joining them as moderator is Kingston poet\, Sarah Yi-Mei Tsiang. \nAuthor Patrons: Alison and Candice Clark\, Steven Page in memory of Joanne Page\, Sadiqa de Meijer \nBONUS! At the start of the event\, tune in to Skeleton Park Arts Festival‘s video Renga of a Distanced Spring: Six months ago (March 26\, 2020) the City of Kingston declared a State of Emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Not long after the City’s declaration seven local poets (Nancy Jo Cullen\, Helen Humphreys\, Kirsteen MacLeod\, Sadiqa de Meijer\, Ashley-Elizabeth Best\, Sarah Tsiang\, and Kingston Poet Laureate Jason Heroux) collaboratively wrote Renga Of A Distanced Spring. Kingston filmmaker Ali Dixon shot and animated the following video to accompany the Renga\, co-presented in commemoration by the Skeleton Park Arts Festival.

The festival will include the stories of women\, the stories of Indigenous writers\, writers of different experiences\, cultural backgrounds\, and orientations. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDiner Cuisine – Tradition and Taste from the Catskills: 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm on September 25th\, 2020 \nDiner food is comfort food\, and the Phoenicia Diner celebrates the regional produce and food traditions of the idyllic Catskills mountains region. American author Sara Franklin has made a study of the relationship of food and agriculture to identification with place through the lenses of local food traditions and generational memory. Joined by Kingston food writer and author of Out of Old Ontario Kitchens\, Lindy Mechefske\, they explore the Catskills region’s fascinating history and the revival that defines it today\, and ponder the similarities and differences between its historical food traditions and those of settlers in Ontario\, and even Kingston\, itself. \nWhile they chat\, Kingston participants can enjoy mouth-watering and hearty offerings\, home-style cooking with flare\, with a menu inspired by The Phoenicia Diner Cookbook\, interpreted and prepared with love and local ingredients by Chef Richard Nicholas of Chez Piggy Restaurant. The festival will include the stories of women\, the stories of Indigenous writers\, writers of different experiences\, cultural backgrounds\, and orientations. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRDL – Black Lives Matter: 8:00 pm – 8:45 pm on September 25th\, 2020 \nBlack Lives Matter is currently at the forefront of the news cycle\, with worldwide protests and shocking stories revealed almost daily of incidents of systemic racism. In recounting a year of personal experience of racism\, Black anti-racism activist and author Desmond Cole offers his experience as a lens through which we can see ourselves clearly.
