DESCRIPTION:LiterASIAN 2020 – “Quiet No More” \nA Festival of Asian Canadian Writing \nAugust 15 to August 30\, 2020 \n  \nIn light of the COVID-19 pandemic\, LiterASIAN 2020 goes virtual! \nThis year’s theme is “Quiet No More“. LiterASIAN 2020 features an incredible line up of authors with a full schedule of events. The festival is located on the unceded Coast Salish Territories of the Musqueam\, Tsleil Waututh\, and Squamish people. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAnthology or Magazine? Writing and Submitting to a Literary Publication \nWhen submitting to a literary publication\, it’s very easy for even the most creative and accomplished pieces to be thrown into the “slush pile.” Literary magazines range from niche webzines to university-funded print journals to renowned publications like Paris Review. The amount of slush published varies accordingly\, but one thing is certain: acceptance is no sure thing as submissions far exceed quotas. Unpublished writers who are looking for their first publications are often concerned about whether literary magazines or anthologies ever publish unpublished writers for good reason: all publications receive far more work that they can publish and far more work than the editors can read. \nEvery writer starts out unpublished\, so we have to start somewhere. This workshop is intended for those who are starting out in their writing careers who need a strategy or a spark to getting their early craft accepted. Two editors offer their experiences and guidance on the inner workings of the often exclusive and opaque world of publishing. \nFeaturing: \n\nJF Garrard\, deputy editor of Ricepaper Magazine and editor of anthology\, Futuristic Canada\n\n\nAllan Cho\, executive editor\, Ricepaper Magazine and editor of anthology\, Alliterasian\n\nJF Garrard is the President of Dark Helix Press\, an Indie publisher of multicultural Fantasy\, Science Fiction\, and Raw Non-Fiction. She also serves as the Co-President for the Canadian Authors Association’s Toronto Branch\, Festival Coordinator for LiterASIAN Toronto\, Deputy Editor for Ricepaper Magazine\, and Assistant Editor for Amazing Stories\, one of the world’s first science-fiction magazines. She is an editor and writer of speculative fiction (Immersion\, Futuristic Canada\, The Undead Sorceress\, Trump Utopia or Dystopia Anthology\, Ricepaper Issue 19.3)\, non-fiction (The Literary Elephant)\, as well as children’s books (Feeding The Kraken!\, 3x Bilingual Series). Her background is in Nuclear Medicine and she has a MBA in Marketing and Strategy. She has been a speaker at various conferences on the topics of publishing\, marketing\, crowd funding\, geek topics (science fiction\, anime) and healthcare. Her contributions have been published in Entrepreneur\, Monster.com\, Women’s Health\, Cosmopolitan\, MochiMag\, My Corporation\, Indie Pubchat\, Authors Helping Authors\, among others. \nAllan Cho is the Executive Editor at Ricepaper Magazine and Festival Director of LiterASIAN. As an academic librarian at the University of British Columbia\, his research interests include Asian Diasporic Studies. Allan is actively engaged in a number of initiatives in the community and has served on the board of the Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop Society (ACWW)\, Chinese Canadian Historical Society of British Columbia (CCHSBC) and Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society (VAHMS). He writes occasionally and has published in the Georgia Straight\, Diverse Magazine\, and Ricepaper. His fiction has appeared in the anthologies\, The Strangers and Eating Stories: A Chinese Canadian and Aboriginal Potluck. He has edited the anthology AlliterAsian: Twenty Years of Ricepaper Magazine with Julia Lin and Jim Wong-Chu and Immersions with JF Garrard and William Tham. \nRegister HERE.
