"Crafters love anything cozy, and nothing says cozy like a bear in a knit scarf. Author-designer Lebedenko (Sewing Scrap Blocks with Character, 2020) creates three similarly shaped, simply designed animals—specifically, a grizzly bear, a polar bear, and a panda bear—and incorporates them into embellishments for 18 different objects, from quilt blocks to gift tags and boxes. Upfront instructions are abbreviated; there’s a long list of supplies along with the how-to's on fabricating pompons, stuffing the bears, and constructing and finishing the quilts, plus a few ABCs of painting and quilting. The actual patterns include graphs, lists of materials needed, and color illustrations of putting together the various pattern pieces (templates for which are included in a 16-plus-page section in the back of the book). All designs are geared to winter festivities—stuffed ornaments, a mug cozy, and a cookie bowl, among others. Best for the many crafters who have mastered the rudiments of sewing, quilting, and knitting."

About the Author

My name is Olesya Lebedenko and I'm an artist from Ukraine living in Canada. I'm a teacher, designer, quilter, books author, magazine contributor, doll maker, and the founder and owner of Olesya Lebedenko Design brand. My patterns have been featured in Canadian, USA and Ukrainian publications (more than 40 patterns and workshops). I made dozens of tutorials, articles, and I've led hundreds of workshops in Europe and Canada. I had a shop and my personal studio back to Ukraine for 10 years. In 2018-2019 I challenged myself to start the 365 Days of Quilt Scraps Challenge (#365daysquiltscraps). I made one block per day for a whole year. During the challenge I created my technique (paperless piecing) of how to make a block from a sketch to a ready fabric art piece. You can find all those blocks on my Instagram account (@olesyalebedenkodesign). As a result I signed a contract with Fox Chapel Publishing (Landauer Publishing) and in October 2019 there was a release of my first book Sewing Scrap Blocks with Character. After the first book I signed a contract for two more books. Right now in my portfolio I have three ready books and more than 55 publications in magazines. In 2020 I became a BERNINA Canada Ambassador. I'm working upon BERNINA's accessories blocks collection. Right now I'm focusing on new books, pattern designs and on-line (in-person) classes.
