Bio Born and raised in Montreal, May is first generation Chinese Canadian, whose family was impacted by both the Head Tax on Chinese Immigrants (1885-1923) and the Chinese Immigration Act (1923-1947). In 2023, Canada commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Act, and showed the traumatic effects of this legislation on individuals and families. May wrote about this in "A Cowherd in Paradise (Brindle&Glass, 2012)." She graduated from McGill University (1st Class Honours), and attended the University of Guelph, where she met her husband. They have been together for over 44 years. They have lived in Victoria since 1980, where she earned a Masters in Public Administration at the University of Victoria. After retiring from a dynamic career in the BC Public Service, and volunteering in organizations at the local and national levels, May tried her hand at writing. Her second book, "City in Colour (TouchWood Editions, 2018)" reflects May's interest in diversity and equity issues. She is a past Mentor for Diaspora Dialogues and a past member of the BC Branch of CAA. She has been interviewed on CBC Radio, and been invited to present at WOTS Vancouver, Joy Kogawa House, LiterAsian, historical societies, and other community groups. She is a book reviewer for BC Books. Her website, which she created during COVID, promotes creativity, particularly through her interests in writing, knitting, sewing, painting, cooking, and Kenpo Karate, at whatever age.
